Reflections: Outrageous Love, Transforming Power by Wardle

This post contains reflections on the first chapters of Terry Wardle’s book.

Pages 10-11: Though I have probably not thought of it in these terms before, Dr. Wardle is right. There are many Christians, including Christian leaders, whom are not mature in Christ. He is right in saying that many judge maturity by one’s beliefs, behavior, and participation in church. The idea that true Christian maturity means becoming like Christ, is both simple and yet profound.

What it seems that he means is that maturity takes place from the inside out. It is not simply believing or doing the right things. It means being transformed by God at a heart level.

Pg. 21: It is reassuring to see that maturity is not something we have to attain by our effort alone. It is compelling to realize that because we have God’s Spirit living inside of us as Christians, that maturity is developed from the “seed of Christ” already living inside of us. It is freeing to know that maturity in many ways is simply living and experiencing life in light of what is already true of us.

Pg. 28: I agree that unfortunately it seems that many even in church are insecure, and are trying to ascend the social ladder at the expense of others. There are many, even Pastors, who feel they need the position in order to determine their identity.

Pg. 30: Dr. Wardle’s story about accepting the position at the seminary he did in order to “be somebody” is also compelling. When your identity is not secure in Christ, being given the opportunity of a prestigious position may be a means to securing that identity.

Pg. 38: One statement that I thought may have been overstated, was when Dr. Wardle said that being like Jesus “alone” is the goal of the Christian life. Other writers and speakers such as John Piper or Larry Crabb compellingly make a case that knowing and loving Jesus is the primary goal of the Christian life. Certainly these ideas are closely related. Could you really have one without the other? However, as I think of it now, becoming like Jesus is a crucial yet secondary goal, closely tied to relating well to God in Jesus.
